ISTANBUL (DIHA) – Human Rights Association (IHD) released its report of rights violations during the first six months of 2010 in Turkey. According to the data, 1,263 people were taken into custody, 169 individuals were injured due to lynching attempts and 179 individuals were tortured while in custody.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, IHD held meetings and demonstrations in Istanbul and Mersin. Umit Efe, Executive Board Member, addressed the crowd in Istanbul: “Human rights violations like torture and arbitrary detainment are on the rise, just as are lynching attempts. Our report of the first six months of 2010 paints the shameful picture of rights violations.

1,263 people were arrested. 169 individuals were injured due to lynching attempts and 179 individuals were tortured under custody. Furthermore, 177 children were sentenced to 772 years, 2 months and 26 days in prison, in total; 37 journalists arrested, 7 newspapers closed down and finally 4,662 web sites blocked by law. The picture is really shameful and we need to turn it into another picture which we might be proud of it. ”
